Monolith is a material-research studio working in concrete, quarried stone, cast iron and clay — objects designed to keep changing for decades after they leave the yard.
Anyone can finish a surface. We are interested in the fifty years after.
Monolith does not laminate, seal, or otherwise argue with what a material wants to do over time. Weather, oxidation and use are treated as collaborators in the work, not defects to be designed out of it.

Every commission begins at the quarry, foundry, or clay pit. We select material in person — grain, vein and flaw are chosen, not specified on a sheet.
Study
Full-scale drawings and physical maquettes, often in a cheaper stand-in material, before the real block is touched.
Rough form
Material is roughed to within a few centimetres of its final form — by hand, by CNC, or both, depending on what the piece asks for.
