Weathering Column

A 3.4-metre corten steel column left outdoors for eleven months before its first public showing, so the rust could finish the drawing.

Letting the weather co-author it

Weathering Column left the studio as a bare, mill-finished steel plate and spent eleven months standing in an open yard before it was considered complete. Corten's stable rust layer only forms through repeated wet-dry cycles — there is no shortcut that produces the same depth of colour, and every attempt to accelerate it looks exactly like what it is.

Building for the weather it will get

The column's welded seams are angled specifically to shed water in the direction of prevailing wind at the site it was designed for, so that staining runs with the piece's form rather than against it. Where a work will stand changes how it is built, not just where it is delivered.

On permanence and its opposite

Corten is often described as a material that stops decaying once it rusts. That is not quite true — it decays at a much slower, self-limiting rate, which is a different promise. Weathering Column is built to keep changing, slowly, for longer than anyone currently on staff will be here to see it.

Come back in twenty years. It will still be finishing the sentence.
