Subtraction as the only move available
Basalt does not bend. Quarry Fold's folded form exists entirely because of what was cut away, not what was added — a slow argument between a diamond wire saw and nine hundred kilograms of stone that took four months to resolve. Every pass removes a few centimetres and cannot be undone, which means the piece was drawn a hundred times in chalk before the saw ever touched it.
The colour underneath
Fresh-cut basalt is a startling, almost blue-black grey that oxidises within weeks to the deep charcoal you see in the finished piece. We let that oxidation happen in the open air rather than accelerating it chemically — the surface you are looking at is roughly eighteen months of ordinary weather, not a finish applied in a single afternoon.

On the fold that isn't there
There is no actual fold in Quarry Fold — no hinge, no bent plane. The suggestion of cloth caught mid-fall is an illusion built entirely from the angle of two cut faces meeting at just under the angle your eye expects from real fabric. Stone that appears to move is, to us, more interesting than stone that actually could.
